I remember going to the grocery store with my mom and sister and watching the clerk run the cash register. I thought it was one of the neatest devices ever invented, and I wanted so much to try my hand at the bar code scanning, total tallying machine. I did get my wish later on as a teenager, and I found the machine to be great fun (not to say some of the novelty didn’t wear off over time!). The first cash registers didn’t have the scanners and computer chips we have become accustomed to today. As a matter of fact, they didn’t make their appearance until 1879 when James Ritty invented the first cash register.
