Charles Sturt was born in India in 1795. He was a British citizen and joined the British army in 1813. In 1827, he and his regiment were sent to Sydney in the colony of New South Wales. While there, Sturt became very interested in exploring Australia, as much of it was unexplored at the time. He discovered the Darling River on February 2, 1829, and named the river after the colonial governor Sir Ralph Darling.
