New writing opportunity with SchoolhouseTeachers.com, the curriculum arm of The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine. One of our Schoolhouse Dailies is called Ditch the Desk. Ditch the Desk was formerly a month-long or biweekly unit. The new Ditch the Desk for 2014 will be a collection of week-long projects built on themes. You would create a step-by-step lesson that could last from 1 to 5 days (longer is OK too! Just let us know.) and incorporates a more hands on-style of learning focused on grades K-5.
You can include a reading list or virtual activities; you can share photos of your children doing the activities you describe. The lesson can be a combination of indoor and outdoor activities, but it should be motion-based more than text-based.
Here are a few of the themes we’ve come up with so far, but these are just to get your creative juices flowing! The possibilities are almost endless. Themes might include: trains, planes, cars, harvest, thankfulness, sun, moon, cowboys, Native Americans, short and tall, big and small, fractions, astronauts, baseball, basketball, football, spring, rain, flowers, bugs, books, rocks, lakes, field trips, national parks, beaches, ocean, trees, baking, cooking, P.E., horses, fruit, sewing, quilting, crafts, colors . . .
