How to Teach Kids About Moses, the Exodus, and the Tabernacle – 3 New Books for Elementary & Middle Grades

Blog· Reviews· Homeschooling

Danika Cooley has a gift for making hard Biblical and historical concepts and events easy for kids to understand and fun for them to engage with. I love how she has done both with her three newest books all about Moses, the Exodus, and the Tabernacle. These books are the third set in her Who What Why series of Christian history books for kids. The first three books in this series were Who Was Martin Luther, What Was the Gutenberg Bible, and Why Did the Reformation Happen? They are a great look at the Church during the Reformation. She also wrote Who Were the Abolitionists?, What Was the Underground Railroad?, and Why Did Slavery End?. You can check out my review of those incredible books here. With her newest books, Danika helps you teach your kids who God is through the story of the Exodus.

What Was the Tabernacle?

What Was the Tabernacle? is designed for kids to understand. One of the MANY things I love about this book is that it doesn’t start with a deep dive into the tabernacle itself. It starts with Who God is, who we are, and why we need God to provide the way for us to be together. It shows how God’s desire has always been to be with His people, but because of our rebellion against Him, we need a way to be forgiven of our sin so we can be with Him again. Danika’s book shows how God gave us shadows in the Old Testament, such as the sacrifices and the Tabernacle, of what He was ultimately going to do through the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. And Danika does it all in an engaging way that is perfectly designed for kids to understand and relate to.

Why Did the Exodus Happen?

Have you ever made a promise you failed to keep? Has anyone ever broken their promise to you? Danika Cooley’s book Why Did the Exodus Happen? highlights an important truth – God never breaks His promises. Not a single one. It helps kids understand that God is faithful and highlights God’s faithfulness throughout a difficult time in His people’s history. It also shows how God used the Exodus to show people Who He is. He demonstrated His faithfulness, power, sovereignty, patience, love and care, and so much more through the events that transpired. And He demonstrated through Passover His desire to save and rescue us. The Passover sacrifice He commanded then foreshadowed the ultimate sacrifice Jesus would later make once and for all time. This is an incredible book for helping kids learn about God’s faithfulness and His desire to save and rescue all people from their sin so they can live with Him forever.

WHo Was Moses?

Moses was one of the most influential people in the Bible, but do your kids really know and understand his story? In Who Was Moses?, Danika Cooley helps kids learn – really learn – from the life of Moses. She leads kids on an engaging journey through the life of Moses not just so they are familiar with the stories recorded about him in the Bible but so they can learn some of what God wants to teach them today through the life of this incredible man. They’ll see Moses had strengths and weaknesses, just like we do. And they’ll see how he knew God face to face and yet still stumbled and made terrible mistakes. They will see God’s faithfulness to one of His prophets and His continued faithfulness to us today, and they will see how God was at work through the life of Moses to point His people toward the salvation He would one day bring through Jesus Christ. Throughout the book, Danika connects the Old Testament and the New Testament so kids can understand that the story of Moses isn’t just something that happened long ago but is something that still matters to us today. Danika has a gift for sharing deep, vital truth in a way that is fun and engaging for kids to read and understand.
