Jane Austen was an English author who was born December 16, 1775, in the village of Steventon, in Hampshire, England. Her father was a scholar and always encouraged his children (Jane, her six brothers, and one sister) to love learning. It appears Jane loved learning—her earliest writings that we still have today are from when she was about twelve years old. She began publishing novels in 1811 and wrote five novels before her death in 1817. Of all her novels, Pride and Prejudice, her second novel, is one of her most remembered. Full of colorful characters and the flavor of life in England in the early 19th century, the story deals with the conflicts between different social classes.
