Do you have a child in your life who loves to build, someone whose imagination never seems to stop creating? I do. His name is Caleb, and it seems the only limit to what he can build is the materials he can get his hands on to use! That’s why I think the Robotics Workshop for Kids is such a great resource (and it would make the perfect Christmas present!).
Robotics Workshop for Kids was created by the team at A+ TutorSoft with the goal of sparking an interest in robotics in kids and fueling their desire to build, create, and learn. It’s a great way to help them develop confidence and critical thinking and will provide them with skills they can use in robotics, engineering, technology, and many other related fields. Plus, it provides hours of fun!
There are several ways you can get your kids involved with robotics through Robotics Workshop for Kids. I’m going to explain each one briefly below, but you need to visit their website to stay up to date on all the new stuff they are adding! The workshops are designed for kids ages 10 and older, but younger kids can participate with guidance (some of the pieces are very delicate). Younger students especially may enjoy the Workshop Activity Kit or the Robotics Leg Kit, as making an entire robot may be more than they are ready for.
FREE Robotics Workshop for Kids
This is a free, online workshop you can attend with your kids that will introduce them to the world of robotics. It teaches kids basic robotics concepts, helps them understand the design that goes into a robot and the parts needed to build one, teaches them how to assemble a robot and how to program it, and shows them how to issue commands that bring the robot to life right before their eyes!
The workshop itself is completely free and loaded with information kids can use without making a robot for themselves. If you want your student to build a part of the robot along with the instructor in the workshop, you can purchase the Workshop Activity Kit for $16. The kit includes everything your child needs to build a part of the robot and to follow along with the instructor in the workshop—motors, a power pack, mechanical parts, additional components, and even a screwdriver! And the best part? The piece of a robot will actually function!
Robotics Leg Kit with Optional Classes
The Robotics Leg Kit is a great option for kids to go deeper and learn even more about robotics. They do NOT need to have attended the free workshop previously. You can purchase a Robotics Leg Kit that comes with video instructions for $59-$79, or you can purchase it with four or five weekly live online classes with an instructor for $119-$159. In the classes, the instructor will dive a little deeper and explain various aspects of learning about robotics. This will help build a strong foundation in the field of robotics. The instructor will also focus on the programming that enables the robotic leg to perform various functions and help students learn how to modify/create even more new functions. When kids are done, they’ll have a working spider robot leg with various cool movements! This option is coming to the website soon!
Full Robot Kit with Optional Classes
The Robotics Student Kit is the option to choose if your child is ready to dive in and build a working robot. It includes everything you need for your child to build the robot at home, at his or her own pace. It comes with all the parts needed, all the programming code, step-by-step video instructions to build and program the robot, and programming instructions for an app to control the robot.
This super-fun spider robot can move forward, backward, right, and left. It can also wave and do a little dance move! The instructions include ideas your student might want to learn more about if they continue learning about robotics so they can program the robot to do new things. The kit costs $199.
The ultimate way to dive deep into robotics and fully immerse your child in this fascinating field is with the Robotics Class with Student Kit. For less than $100 more than the kit itself, students gain access to a series of weekly, instructor-led, live online classes over an 8-week period. You can do it all from home, but your student will have immediate access to the instructor in the classes to ask questions and get whatever help is needed. PLUS, the instructor will help students write programs to enable the robot to do new things and help students learn how to create even more new functions. This class can truly help launch them into the field of robotics, and having an instructor to answer questions can help students keep trying and not give up when something doesn’t work the way they expect it to at first. Learning how to diagnose what has gone wrong is a critical part of learning how to program, and it’s all included in this class and kit option.
