On March 4, 1837, the charter for the city of Chicago, Illinois, was enacted, incorporating the city. I imagine that many were excited but that some were nervous as well. Life was changing very quickly for many in America in the 1830s, and no one knew what was around the next bend. Today’s short story read aloud is about a little girl on her way to the great city in its early days who didn’t know what she’d find or why she and her family needed to move there, away from Grandma and Grandpa.
