This unit includes “The Big Picture” that provides a brief summary of people and events related to the Middle Ages. It’s designed to serve as a springboard for further discovery and to help students understand how the people and events in the unit are related. An “On Assignment” section follows, which includes ten newspaper reporter assignments, from reporting on the Book of Kells and the agricultural calendar to interviewing farmers and falconers. Next, the student is given newspaper templates to create their news articles. Artwork representing the time is included to give the student’s paper an authentic feel. Print & Cursive Connections: Space: This unit is designed to help young writers see the connection between print and cursive by practicing them together while enjoying an outer space theme. In the first pages of the unit, each word is stacked so that print is immediately followed by cursive. Students then trace the words in the same pattern.
