On this day in history, July 26, 1775, Benjamin Franklin took office as the first Postmaster General. Let’s have fun with some post office-related activities.
- Create a ‘mailbox’ for special delivery mail! Use a shoebox decorated with paper, stickers, markers, crayons, or whatever you have to use. Have a parent or other adult cut a slot for mail to be dropped into the box. Create a flag that can be put up and down so you know if you have mail. (Parents: To use a brad to make the flag moveable, poke a hole in the flag and the side of the box that it will be attached to, then insert brad through both.)
- Write a letter to a friend or family member. Address it correctly, place the correct stamp on the envelope, and put in the mail. You will brighten someone’s day, and you might even receive a letter back in the mail!
- Research zip codes. What are they and what is their importance? Are the zip codes of other countries similar or different than your own? Create a chart of zip codes in your state, county and/or city.
- Find pictures of historic stamps online, with a parent’s permission, or in magazines, and cut them out. Put all your tiny pictures into a larger mosaic!
- Make a chart that shows the price of stamps (in whichever country you choose) and show how the price has changed.
- Do a little stamp research and record your findings. What is the rarest stamp? What is the most valuable stamp? What is the oldest stamp? What is a stamp collector called? What other trivia can you discover about stamps?
