She was thirteen. She was from another country. And, in Nigeria, she became a Senator’s fourth wife. It happened once, and the fear is that it could happen again because of a loophole in the Nigerian constitution. The Nigerian government claims that the legal age a woman can marry is 18. But there is a loophole, a loophole that was supposed to be deleted in a recent Senate debate. A majority had voted that it should be. But a filibuster from a Senator, the same senator who had previously married a 13-year-old girl, ultimately succeeded. The loophole remains.
