December 20, 1860, was a turning point for the United States of America. Talk of secession had been going on for a long time in the southern part of the country. Many problems had arisen concerning states rights and the issue of slavery. Many compromises had been attempted, but none of them settled the problems permanently. Finally, when Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1860, the southern states began to secede, one by one. South Carolina was the first to secede, and it did so on December 20, 1860.
