Description
Everyone always gets excited during a presidential election, but does it really matter who you elect as mayor? Does who the President appoint to the Cabinet affect your daily life? The answers might surprise you. This four-week unit study looks at the electoral process from the ground up, starting with local elections and working up to the presidential election. We’ll look at what impact various elected offices have on our day-to-day lives, what various offices are responsible, and much more. This unit study is designed for older students who enjoy independent study and thoughtful consideration of the questions presented. It consists of four smaller units: local, state, federal, and Supreme Court. Each smaller unit can be completed over the course of one week or less. The unit focuses on history and social studies but also incorporates math, art, health, and language arts. 23 pages total. Ages 11-18.

My tenth-grader and I learned a great deal about our local and state government by going through this unit study! While this unit study is designed for students ages 11-18, I think most middle school students will need some guidance. It’s challenging, but in a good sense. Students must research for their answers—especially on the local and state government sections. Because the unit study is sold to students from every state, students’ answers will vary. Therefore, there is no answer key for the worksheets. Parents/educators will have to verify the answers for their state. Safe website suggestions are given as the sources of information. It takes a little time to do the research but it’s worth it. It’s a great opportunity to teach your students how to research and where to research for accurate information.
