On December 24, 1851, a fire at the Library of Congress destroyed thousands of volumes. Of the approximately 55,000 volumes in the library at the time, it is estimated that about two-thirds of them were lost. Today’s copywork includes Scripture verses that are inscribed within the Library of Congress buildings.
