On September 13, 1960, Haleakala National Park was created on the island of Maui in Hawaii. Prior to this time, the volcano’s summit was part of Hawaii National Park which had been established by Congress in 1916. When the new park was established, Hawaii National Park became Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
